Reading furniture retail park could be demolished

A number of furniture retail stores face an uncertain future in Reading after plans have emerged that could see them be replaced with homes.

Scottish investment company Abrdn has submitted a planning application to potential demolish the Forbury Retail Park, near Reading town centre, to make way for 12 new residential towers.

The retail park currently hosts Furniture Village, DFS, Natuzzi Italia, Bensons for Beds, Designer Sofas, Next Outlet and HomeSense.

The plans state that the housing mix will be a mixture of one, two and three-bed units, which could accommodate around 820 homes.

The documents suggest that the lost stores could be replaced with up to 5,500 sqm of floorspace, which could accommodate a foodstore in the western portion of the site.

The council is currently reviewing the application.
