Poor weather and damp demand impacts garden centre retailer

Indoor and outdoor furniture and leisure retailer Haskins Garden Centres has reported a decline in sales as economic uncertainty ‘dampens’ demand.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 26 February 2023, total sales resulted at £44.2m, down on a like-for-like basis by 8.8% from £48.5m in 2022.

Pre-tax profit stood at £2.7m, down from £9.6m on a like-for-like comparison on the previous year.

Stated within its report, the company, which operates from five garden centres in Southern England, said: “The company traded well despite very poor gardening weather conditions during spring, summer and autumn.

“The economic uncertainty and the return to international holidays following the prior Covid-affected years also dampened turnover in the garden centre industry as a whole.”
