Homewares sales fall on the high street

Homeware sales fell on the high street despite in-store sales delivering a positive performance.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 15.34% for the week ending 31 July 2022.

Total Homeware LFLs fell by 0.95% this week, with in store sales up by 2.38%. This weekā€™s result marks the categoryā€™s third positive result in the last seven weeks. Total LFLs for homeware have been negative in fifteen out of the last sixteen weeks.

Total in-store LFL sales increased by +23.53% from a base of +44.37% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales rose by +6.93% from a base of +18.99% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: ā€œTotal lifestyle and total fashion LFLs saw strong growth this week, while total homewares failed to break into the black.

ā€œThis week saw a mix of bright and sunny spells, with cloud and some rain in northern parts of the UK. The same week last year saw overcast conditions with minimal sunshine and intermittent rain.

 Overall footfall grew by +14% this week compared to the same week last year, led by the high street which saw an improvement of +21.8%.

Shopping centres saw footfall increase by +12.4%, while retail parks saw a decline of -1.0%.
