Homeware sales positive once again on the high street

Homeware sales maintained in positive territory on the high street while footfall continued to see growth.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 0.27% for the week ending 23 October 2022.

Homeware total LFLs were up by +1.24% from a positive base of +2.80% for the same week last year, indicating the category’s fifteenth positive result for this year.

Instore homeware sales increased by +4.08% from a base of +16.93% for the same week last year, marking its twenty ninth positive result for this year.

Total in-store LFL sales increased by +2.60%, from a base of +36.42% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales decreased by -1.52% but was from a base of +14.62% in 2021.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Total LFLs flattened to their lowest level since February 2021 during a week that saw the resignation of Liz Truss as the UK’s Prime Minister. While lifestyle total LFL sales remained in negative territory for a third straight week, fashion total LFL sales recorded its lowest result since the first week of June.

“The weather this week varied across the UK with some areas experiencing mild and slightly warmer conditions whilst some parts of the country saw rain and thunderstorms. The same week last year saw a mix of overcast conditions with interspersed showers and sunshine.”

Overall footfall was up by +4.8% this week compared to the equivalent week in 2021. High street footfall climbed by +7.4% and shopping centres saw footfall increase by +4.9%. On the other hand, retail park footfall was down by -0.7%.
