Homeware delivers twelfth negative week

Homeware sales declined on the high street again, marking a twelfth negative week.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 9.6% for the week ending 3 July 2022.

Total Homeware LFLs fell by 11.63% this week, with in store sales also declining by 5.04%. This week marks the category’s twelfth consecutive negative LFL since April 2022, as well as the third negative in store LFL for homewares following three consecutive weeks of positive LFLs.

Total in-store LFL sales were up by +22.35% from a base of +69.93% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales increased by +1.31% from a base of +5.00% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, the BDO said: “Lifestyle moved back into positive territory as Fashion continued a strong run, while Homewares remained negative on both online and in-store channels for the third straight week.

“The weather was predominantly sunny and warm interspersed with light showers and heavy winds.  The same week last year saw largely overcast conditions accompanied by rain and pockets of sunshine.”

Overall footfall grew by +18.6% this week compared to the corresponding week last year.

The high street saw footfall jump by +26%, while footfall at shopping centres climbed by +19.7%. Footfall at retail parks saw a slight increase of +1.7% compared to the equivalent week last year.
