Homeware delivers sixth negative week

Homeware sales declined on the high street again, marking a sixth negative week.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 19.34% for the week ending 22 May 2022.

Total Homeware LFLs fell by 9% this week, with in store sales down by 3.52% from a strong base of +681.15% for the same week last year.

In store LFLs for homeware have been negative for six consecutive weeks since the first week of April 2022.

Total in-store LFL sales were up by +28.32% from a base of +301.41% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales jumped by +3.67% from a positive base of +4.29% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, the BDO said: “This week saw hot and muggy weather conditions with soaring temperatures in what is considered May’s mini heatwave. The same week last year week saw soggy and damp conditions accompanied by cool temperatures.”

Overall footfall increased by +22.7% this week compared to the equivalent week last year.

High street footfall was up by +33.8%, while shopping centres saw footfall jump by +19.6% and retail parks witnessed +2.1% increase in footfall compared to the same week last year equivalent week last year.
