Fashion and homewares retailer grows sales; rolls out smaller stores

Fashion, homeware and home furnishings retailer The White Company has reported a growth in sales as profit remained strong.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 29 July 2023, total sales rose 4% to £287.2m from £276.2m in 2022.

Pre-tax profit resulted at £32.2m, slightly down from £32.6m recorded the previous year.

UK sales were up 3.6% from £255.7m to £265m, while EU revenues increased 7.8% to £22.1m from £20.5m.

Stated within its report, the company said hat home category sales were maintained at the same level of the previous year, while instore sales saw growth of 15%. Online experienced a reduction of 5%.

During the year, the company opened its second small format trial store in Marlborough as well as a standard format store in Silverburn, Glasgow, both of which performed ahead of expectations. At the year end, the business traded from 53 stores and 11 concessions.

“Based upon the performance of the first two store, we have deemed the small format trial a success and will be rolling the concept out to further locations in the coming years, depending on the availability of appropriate sites,” the company said.

Since the year end, small format stores have opened in Ringwood, St Andrews and Hitchin as well as one standard format store in Belfast, its first in Northern Ireland.

Another small format store is due to open in Farnham, as it continues to look for further opportunities both in the UK and internationally.
