Danish homewares retailer continues UK expansion

Danish homewares retailer Søstrene Grene is set to open in the Southwest region of London in Kingston upon Thames later this summer as well as a debut York store.

Located on Thames Street, the official opening date is set to be announced very soon and will mark Søstrene Grene’s second London opening this year, following the city’s first store in Wandsworth, which launched in May 2023.

The latest store will offer minimalistic, Nordic inspired designs in a wide variety of homewares, soft furnishings, kitchen products, furniture, gifts, hobby crafts, seasonal decorations and children’s toys including “mini home” products.

The ever-expanding retail chain sets out to enrich everyday life by inspiring the Danish notion of ‘hygge’ – a special state of contentment, warmth and belonging that comes from seeking comfort and gratitude in present moments.

Mikkel Grene, CEO and co-owner of Søstrene Grene, comments: “We are very excited to be opening our second London store in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and we look forward to introducing ‘hygge’ and slow living to the residents of this historic market town.”

UK Joint Venture Partners, Norma Jacob and Richard Power, who run Søstrene Grene stores across Northern Ireland, Southern England and Scotland, are also looking forward to their next opening.

Norma Jacob comments: “This is a very exciting time for Søstrene Grene and we can’t wait to open in Kingston. We think the store will be a great addition to the scenic town and will be in great company amongst a whole host of other retailers.”

Richard Power adds: “Kingston will mark the second London store opening for Søstrene Grene this year, amongst many more planned across the south of England. We couldn’t be happier to be launching in the Southwest of the city and continuing to introduce the store’s unique shopping experiences across the UK.”

Shareena Merzi, Director of Communications and Corporate Development at Kingston First, the town’s Business Improvement District, comments: “We’re over the moon to welcome Søstrene Grene as the latest brand to open a store in our vibrant market town and look forward to seeing Kingston shoppers embrace the brand’s cozy and minimalist Nordic-inspired offering.”

Søstrene Grene has also confirmed plans to open its first store in York at the Helmsley Group’s Coach House development.

The retailer has agreed a letting to take a 5,000sqft store at The Coach House, which is on the corner of Nessgate and Low Ousegate, further adding to its store expansion with its other recent opening in Sheffield.
