Strong sales at independent department store group

Independent department store group Morleys has reported a growth in sales as turnover surpassed £80m.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 29 January 2022, total sales rose 56.8% to £83.6m from £53.3m in 2021.

Gross profit increased from £13.8m to £22.9m, while pre-tax profit resulted at £8.4m, up from £1.7m recorded the previous year.

Stated within its report, the group said that it delivered a strong recovery following the disruption and closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the year it continued to invest in its stores, which included the completion of its first phase of major redevelopment at its Brixton store.

The group also invested in new energy efficient lighting and water systems across its store network.

Morleys Group is a chain of independently owned department stores operating in the South East under a variety of different fascias including Morleys (in Brixton and Tooting), Roomes of Upminster, Pearsons of Enfield, Elys of Wimbledon, Selbys and Camp Hopson.
