John Lewis issues mattress topper recall over fire safety risks

Department store retailer John Lewis has issued a product recall on own brand mattress toppers due to a fire risk.

John Lewis has recalled its John Lewis Mattress Toppers – Light Cotton Topper / Sofa Bed Topper, with product codes including: 60701201, 60701202, 60701203, 60701204 and 60708301.

These were on sale during a period from 2 January 2017 to 11 August 2023.

Furthermore, the retailer has issued a recall on its John Lewis branded Goose Down and Duck Down Toppers, with product codes including 60703551, 60703552, 60703553, 60703554, 60700551, 60700552, 60700553, 60700554, 60702101, 60702102, 60702103 and 60702104.

These were on sale during a period from 6 January 2019 to 11 August 2023.

Detailed in the product recall, it states that the products do not meet fire safety requirements of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, and if exposed to a naked flame, they could pose a fire hazard.

“John Lewis are recalling the product due to results of routine testing finding it did not meet the fire safety requirements. This means there is a potential risk of a fire hazard, if the product is exposed to a naked flame,” the retailer said.

In other news, the John Lewis Partnership is to appoint Will Kernan as a Non-Executive Director of the Partnership Board, with effect from 12 September 2023.

Prior to joining Wiggle, he spent five years as the CEO of The White Company, and had a thirteen-year tenure at New Look, during which he assumed various roles ranging from Group Financial Director to Group Trading Director, COO, and ultimately Group Managing Director. Will is currently chairman of furniture and interiors brand Neptune.

Sharon White, Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, said, “I’m delighted to welcome Will as the newest member of our Partnership Board.
