Independent rugs business to close this month

Independent rugs and carpet business, Rug and Carpet Studio, has announced it will close this month.

Based at the Old White Hart in Long Melford, the business, owned by Sara Tatum, has decided to wind down operations and has launched a closing down sale.

The sale will run until 27 May, bringing an end to 34 years of trading. The company said that it was no longer viable to continue.

“It is with great regret and sadness that I have made the incredibly difficult decision to close The Rug & Carpet Studio in Long Melford,” Sara said. “I intend to be involved with the amazing world of handmade rugs in the future, but the shop you all know and enjoy will cease.

“I assure you that this has not been an easy decision. I would be lying if I said we have not been affected by the economic climate. As much as I believe that a beautiful handmade rug is an essential item, realistically purchasing a rug or carpet is not at the top of many people’s priority list at the moment. Additionally, I have personal and family commitments that I want to devote more time to pursuing.

“The 34-year journey of this business has opened so many exciting doors, leading to extraordinary adventures. Beautiful rugs have become deeply ingrained in my soul, and that is never going to leave. Life without them will be impossible.

“I want to reassure anyone who has rugs with us for cleaning and restoration that they are perfectly safe and I will be in contact with you personally. Thank you for your support over the years.”
