Homewares negative for a third straight week; footfall up on high street

Homeware sales fell on the high street despite in-store sales delivering a positive performance once again.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 9.66% for the week ending 7 August 2022.

Total Homeware LFLs fell by 0.60% this week, with in store sales up by 10.05%. This week’s result marks the category’s fourth consecutive positive result in the last eight weeks and its largest increase since the last week of May 2022. Total homewares remained negative for a third consecutive week despite recording positive results in-store.

Total in-store LFL sales climbed by +12.82% from a base of +39.23% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales grew by +4.65% from a base of +22.26% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Although total LFLs sustained its steady run of results, LFL growth slowed this week compared to previous weeks.

“The weather this week was predominantly warm with a mix of sunshine and overcast conditions. The same week last year was marked by sunny spells alongside episodes of heavy rainfall in different parts of the country.”

Overall footfall saw an increase of +13.7% this week compared to the same week last year.

High street footfall grew by +23.1%, while rising by +9.5% in shopping centres. Retail parks on the other hand saw a footfall drop by -2.1%.
