Homeware high street sales return to positive territory

Homeware sales jumped back to growth on the high street, indicating a fifth positive result in the last 10 weeks.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 3.19% for the week ending 14 July 2024.

Homeware total LFL sales jumped +6.26% this week from a base of -1.38% for the same week last year, indicating the category’s fifth positive result in the last 10 weeks and its tenth so far in 2024.

Store homewares LFL sales rose by +4.83% from a good base of +4.82% for the same week last year, symbolising the category’s seventh positive outcome in the last ten weeks.

Total in-store LFL sales increased by +1.41% from a base of +7.38% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales climbed by +6.73% from a base of -0.79% for the same week last year, marking the channel’s eleventh consecutive positive outcome.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Both in-store and non-store sales saw positive outcomes this week, but the major boost to total LFL sales came from the latter. Total lifestyle results saw a drop for the first time in nine weeks due to a weak online outcome, although in-store sales returned a positive result.

“The weather in the UK was a mixed bag with dull and dreary conditions in the East, downpours in the southwest, drizzles in central areas, drier spells in the south and cool and damp conditions in the north. This week last year saw cooler conditions with heavy winds and showers in parts of the UK.”

Overall footfall declined by -0.5% compared to the corresponding week last year. Shopping centres saw footfall drop by -3.0% while retail parks a decrease of -1.3%. High street footfall, however, saw a slight increase of +1.0%.
