Furniture searches in April mixed as garden stands out again

UK searches of furniture during April delivered a mixed result while searches within outdoor and garden furniture proved the most popular once again.

According to Google search data analysed by Big Furniture Group, one day during April 2024 saw ‘furniture’ searches record an index score of 90 or more, while a score over 80 came in at four days. The highest searched date was 1 April with a full score 100.

Google index’s its search data to 100. This means where 100 is the maximum search interest for the term selected, it is the highest value and indicates a high internet search.

The results saw related searches of ‘rattan garden furniture’ a popular search, up 2,800%, while more specific brand terms included ‘Oak Furnitureland’, up 1,450%, ‘The Cotswold Company’, up 90%, and ‘Homebase’, up 50%. Other popular terms included ‘garden furniture’, 40%, and ‘bar stool’, also up 40%. The term ‘British Heart Foundation furniture shop online’ registered an increase of over 3,000%, while ‘outdoor furniture cushions’ searches rose 90%.

Other search terms Big Furniture Group reviewed included mattresses, bedroom furniture, dining furniture, living room furniture, sofas, carpets and flooring.

Mattresses

Mattress searches recorded four peak dates with an index score value of 90 or more. The highest searched date was 7 April with a full score of 100. Related brand searches saw Simba, Emma, Dormeo, Tempur and Duvalay all perform strongly, with ‘Emma Original Memory Foam Mattress’ searches recording an uptick in searches of 750%. The term ‘Tempur mattress protector’ saw searches rise 200%, while ‘folding bed with mattress’ searches increased 80% and ‘cooling mattress topper’ rose 70%. Furthermore, the term ‘super king mattress protecter’ delivered a high volume of searches, with ‘Premier Inn Mattress’ searches also popular. Another popular search term was ‘best mattresses 2024’, which could suggest consumers looking to compare.

Bedroom furniture

Bedroom furniture searches recorded three days of peak activity with an index value over 90. The highest searched date was 1 April with a full score of 100. Popular brand searches included Furniture Village, Laura Ashley, Oak Furnitureland, Wayfair, John Lewis and The Range. The term ‘bedroom design’ saw searches rise 550%, while ‘ready assembled bedroom furniture’ searches were a breakout trend. Meanwhile, ‘rattan bedroom furniture’ delivered high searches, as did the associated colour style of ‘black’.

Dining furniture

Dining furniture searches recorded two days of peak activity with an index value over 90. The most searched day was the 14 April, which scored a full 100. Popular brand searches included FurnitureBox, B&M, Dunelm, Oak Furnitureland, The Cotswold Company, Very, IKEA, Cox & Cox and Homebase. The term ‘patio dining set’ was a popular search, while ‘garden dining furniture’ and ‘rattan garden furniture’ experienced high breakout searches. Other popular terms included ‘corner dining set’ and ‘round dining table’.

Living room furniture

Living room furniture saw two peak days during the month. The most searched day was 14 April that scored the full 100 score. Popular brand related searches included DFS, Next, Oak Furnitureland and Furniture Village. The terms ‘grey living room furniture’, ‘tv unit’ and ‘living room chair’ all performed strongly, while ‘armchair’ searches were up 450%, ‘sofabed’ rose 90%, and the colours ‘blue’, ‘white’ and ‘cream’ all saw searches over 50%.

Sofas

Sofa searches saw four peak dates, with the highest score of 100 recorded on 1 April. Popular related searches included ‘outdoor sofa’, up 60%, ‘rattan garden furniture’, up 100%, ‘garden sofa cushions’, up 90%, ‘grey sofa bed’, up 70%, and ‘rattan corner sofa’, up 90%. Other popular terms included ‘sofa on finance’, ‘seater corner sofa’, ‘modular corner sofa’ and ‘modular sofa bed’. As for brands, popular searches included Vintage Sofa, The Sofa Delivery Company, Sofology, Oak Furnitureland, The Cotswold Company, Swyft, Heal’s, M&S, OKA, Designer Sofas, John Lewis, IKEA, KC Sofas and Kingcome Sofas.

Flooring & Carpets

Flooring searches saw two days scoring over 90, with the highest dates being 2 April and 6 April, both scoring the full 100. Carpet searches saw six days scoring over 90, with the highest date on 6 April scoring the full 100. Popular brand searches included Wickes, Tile Mountain, Invictus, Amtico, Karndean, Flooring365, Flooring Superstore, United Carpets, Carpet World, DFS, Terry’s Carpets, Wilsons Carpets and Tapi Carpets. Popular search terms included ‘cushion vinyl flooring’, ‘luxury vinyl click flooring’, ‘buy carpets online’, ‘grass carpet’ and ‘artificial grass’.
