Flammability regs to be addressed in FIRA webinar

UKAS-accredited testing house, FIRA International, have released details of their next webinar, entitled ‘Flammability regulations and testing for furniture (domestic, contract and beds / mattresses)’.

The session will take a much broader look at flammability regulations and incorporate the Irish flammability Regulations and the ‘Cal Regs’, alongside UK regulations – in particular the domestic regulations, which are currently under discussion.

Taking place on Wednesday 25 May at 10am, the session will see Howard James, Testing and Technical Manager, and Steve Cotton, Technical Specialist – Flammability and Physical Upholstery, both from FIRA International take a look at different flammability regulations and demonstrate how tests are conducted.

The webinar will start with a look at UKAS Accredited testing to the Irish Regulations S.I. No. 316/1995 – Industrial Research and Standards (Fire Safety) (Domestic Furniture) Order, 1995. This is key following the U-Turn by the Irish Government post-Brexit to no longer recognise the UK The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 as an equivalent regulation for compliance

Next up will be the ‘Cal Regs’ – California TB 117-2013 Requirements, Test Procedure and Apparatus for Testing the Smolder Resistance of Materials Used in Upholstered Furniture. There will be an example of a Cal Reg cigarette test, which uses a different test rig and cigarettes to the UK test, which includes to cigarette being covered by a fabric for the duration of the test (which can last for 45 minutes).

There will then be updates on the proposed revisions to the ‘Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations’, as these regulations are currently under discussion with the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).

Finally the session will move into an anonymous open Q&A session, where delegates can ask questions regarding flammability testing and achieving compliance.

Registration for the webinar is now open at www.fira-international.com/flamwebinar
