Discount homeware retailer eyes up Fareham expansion

Discount homeware retailer B&M has announced plans to open a new store in Fareham.

According to a planning application submitted to Fareham Borough Council, the retailer wants to take over the former Argos/Carpet Barn unit on Southampton Road, Park Gate, which is currently vacant.

The proposal states that B&M would create around 85 new jobs for the area and will add to its other two retail locations in the borough.

The stores floor space, including the warehouse and the external garden centre – which a separate planning application has been submitted for, will total around 48,800sqft.

Planning documents state: “All additional roles would be advertised and recruited locally. As a growing retailer opening a new store on average every week, B&M offers exceptional career progression and opportunities within the store and at area management level.

“The proposal will make a positive contribution to economic growth and prosperity and accords with the council’s agenda to promote development that results in economic growth.

“The general area has a customer base which comprises some less affluent households which are attracted to products that are offered at discount prices. However, B&M Retail Ltd also appeals to more affluent households.”

The applications are currently under view and will be conclude by 11 December 2022.
