March 2025 furniture production shows monthly decline

The rate of furniture production during March 2025 registered a monthly decline, while the value in domestic goods was up on the previous month and also against last year.

According to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) data, the rate of furniture production fell by 3.4% compared to February, while up 1.4% on March last year.

Production output is estimated to have fallen by 0.7% on the month in March 2025, following growth of 1.7% in February 2025. The fall in March 2025 was mainly driven by manufacturing output decreasing by 0.8% during the month.

Meanwhile, the value of the manufacture of furniture for March resulted at £892.4m, up 3.5% from £862.1m in February. Against the same period last year, the value increased 3.4% from £862.9m.

As for the value of furniture manufacturer exports, this increased 34.9% to £50.6m for the month from £37.5m. Against last year, exports value rose 3% from £49.1m.

The value of domestic furniture manufacture increased 2% to £841.8m from £824.6m in the month, while up 3.4% from £813.8m last year.

Monthly real gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have grown by 0.2% in March 2025, following unrevised growth of 0.5% in February 2025.

Commenting on the latest GDP figures, ONS Director of Economic Statistics Liz McKeown said: “The economy grew strongly in the first quarter of the year, largely driven by services, though production also grew significantly, after a period of decline.

“Growth in services was broad based, with wholesale, retail and computer programming all having a strong quarter as did car leasing and advertising. These were only slightly offset by falls in education, telecoms and legal services.”
