Homeware high street sales at lowest point since July

Homeware sales remained in negative territory on the high street, marking the lowest result for the category since the second week of July.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 5.52% for the week ending 11 December 2022.

Homeware total LFLs tumbled by 13.74% from a flat base of +0.42% for the same week last year, marking the lowest result for the category since the second week of July, and it’s thirty third negative result this year.

Instore homeware sales fell by 7.98% from a base of +7.41% for the same week last year, signalling its sixteenth negative result this year and its lowest since the second week of August.

Total in-store LFL sales jumped by +9.48%, from a base of +16.95% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales were up by +2.58% from a base of +2.87% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Total LFLs grew primarily on the back of strong in-store performance for lifestyle and fashion segments. In-store LFL sales recorded the largest growth since the first week of October, though off a smaller base than seen in previous weeks. Total homeware LFLs saw the lowest result since the second week of July owing to weak sales across all channels.

“This week saw frosty and snowy weather, with several consecutive days of sub-zero temperatures and mist across the UK. In contrast, the same week last year saw unseasonably warm yet overcast conditions, with a mixture of sunshine and showers.”

Overall footfall rose by +9.7% this week compared to the same week in 2021. At +14.8%, High Street footfall enjoyed its second consecutive week of double-digit growth, while Shopping Centre footfall, at +7.0%, was the highest growth since October. Retail Park footfall grew by +1.8% from the same week in 2021.
