Furniture searches deliver mixed August 2024; sofa searches rise

UK searches of furniture during August slightly down on last month, although searches of sofas, living room furniture and Oak Furnitureland proved the most popular.

According to Google search data analysed by Big Furniture Group, six days during August 2024 saw ‘furniture’ searches record an index score of 90 or more, while a score over 80 came in at 11 days. The highest searched date was 24 August with a full score 100.

Google index’s its search data to 100. This means where 100 is the maximum search interest for the term selected, it is the highest value and indicates a high internet search.

The results saw related searches of ‘living room’ a popular search, while more specific brand terms included ‘Oak Furnitureland’, up 950%, ‘Wayfair’, up 100%, and ‘Cookes furniture’, up 600%. Other popular terms included ‘scs sofas’, up 50%, ‘charity shop furniture’, also up 50%, and ‘cotswold furniture’, up 40%. Brands including ScS, The Cotswold Co and The British Heart Foundation all saw a spike in searches.

Other search terms Big Furniture Group reviewed included mattresses, bedroom furniture, dining furniture, living room furniture, sofas, carpets and flooring.

Mattresses

Mattress searches recorded four peak dates with an index score value of 90 or more. The highest searched date was 24 August with a full score of 100. Related brand searches saw Simba – up 150%, Dreams – up 40% and breakout searches of MattressOnline. Mlily, Silentnight, Tempur, Nectar, IKEA and John Lewis were other notable searches. The term ‘best mattress’ saw searches rise 40%, while ‘orthopaedic mattress topper’ searches increased 50%, ‘igel mattress’ searches rose 40% and ‘firm mattress topper’ saw high search data.

Bedroom furniture

Bedroom furniture searches recorded one day of peak activity with an index value over 90. The highest searched date was 26 August with a full score of 100. Popular brand searches included Wren, French Bedroom Company, B&Q, House of Fraser, ercol, Wayfair, Oak Furnitureland, The Cotswold Company, M&S, Next and Argos. The term ‘kids bedroom furniture sets’ rose 250%, while ‘rustic bedroom furniture’ searches were up 140%. ‘Double bed’ searches rose 70% and ‘dark bedroom furniture’ increased 60%. Meanwhile, ‘bedroom furniture stores’ and ‘walnut bedroom furniture’ searches rose 50% respectively.

Dining furniture

Dining furniture searches recorded one day of peak activity with an index value over 90. The most searched day was the 11 August, which scored a full 100. Popular brand searches included Kettle, ScS, Heal’s, Oak Furnitureland (up 700%), John Lewis, Furniture Village, Barker and Stonehouse and Dunelm. The term ‘kitchen & dining room table’ rose 40%, while ‘extending dining table’ rose 70%. Searches of ‘rustic dining table’ and ‘corner dining bench’ increased 50%.

Living room furniture

Living room furniture saw four peak days during the month. The most searched day was 24 August that scored the full 100 score. Popular brand related searches included ScS, John Lewis, B&Q, IKEA, Sofology, Oak Furnitureland, The Cotswold Company, Dunelm and Furniture Village. The terms ‘living room coffee table’ (up 90%) and ‘coffee table’ (up 40%) both performed well, while ‘loveseat’, ‘accent chair’, ‘matching living room furniture’ and ‘nest of tables’ were all breakout searches.

Sofas

Sofa searches saw four peak dates, with the highest score of 100 recorded on 24 August and 26 August. Popular related searches included ‘dfs orka sofa’, ‘mid century sofa’, ‘scs sofa bed’ and ‘throw pillow’. Other popular terms included ‘cheap sofas for sale under £300’ (up 200%), ‘4 seater sofas’ (up 130%) and ‘deep sofas’ (up 90%). As for brands, popular searches included Swoon, DFS, ScS, Sofa Workshop, Swyft, Dusk, Oak Furnitureland, Natuzzi, Sofas & Stuff, Sofa Club

Flooring & Carpets

Flooring searches saw 15 days scoring over 90, with the highest date being 26 August, scoring the full 100. Carpet searches saw nine days scoring over 90, with the highest date on 24 August scoring the full 100. Popular brand searches included Tapi Carpets, United Carpets, Pay Weekly Carpets, Terry’s Carpets, Calverts, Wilson Carpets, UK Flooring Direct, Amtico Flooring, Frank’s Flooring and Abingdon Flooring. Popular search terms included ‘stair carpet runner’, ‘john lewis carpets’, ‘cream carpet’ and ‘how long do carpets last’.
